This year’s Boilermaker won’t be the race we remember

It’s known as the largest 15K road race in the country, but the Boilermaker we’ve become accustomed to will be much different this year. However, the city of Utica and Oneida County are still getting ready to host thousands of visitors this weekend for both the 15K and 5K races.

One of the most noticeable changes is that the Health and Fitness Expo that typically takes place at Mohawk Valley Community College. This year, it’s being held in the former Macy’s store at Sangertown Square. Officials said with college is in session right now, it’s just easier to hold the expo at the mall rather than on campus.

Another difference is that only about 7,000 runners are registered for the 15K. In a good year, we’ve seen the race has hosted anywhere from 15,000 to 19,000 runners. Many of the typical events like the kids’ run, spaghetti dinner and autograph sessions will have to wait until next year.

The race won’t feature invited elite international runners, but it will still attract runners from 40 states to Utica.

Runners in town who are picking up their race packets at the expo must have proof of vaccination with them. There will be a bib pick-up on race day, but racers are advised to arrive early on Sunday.

“Please visit our FAQ section of our website. Because we have to do vaccination checks. We have the times and the window to pick up your packet on race day, which is shorter than normal and ends sooner than normal,” said Boilermaker President Mark Donovan.

Because of the seasonal darkness, both the 15K and 5K will start 15 minutes later than normal. The 5K will start at 7:30 a.m., and the 15K at 8:15 a.m. on Sunday.

On a good note, the Boilermaker is without question the largest event of the year for the local economy. Despite the lower numbers, it’s still expected to be a great weekend for local hotels, restaurants and stores in Oneida County.

The event was fully virtual last year, and about 400 runners will compete in a virtual race again this year.

If you’re heading to the expo, it will take place Friday and Saturday. Hours are noon to 7 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
