Rome, NY — The Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement (MVILR), in
conjunction with Mohawk Valley Community College, will host a timely and engaging
presentation featuring Dan Casler, an 11th-generation farmer and Town Supervisor
of Little Falls, on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
The event will take place at the MVCC Rome Campus, Plumley Complex, Festive
Auditorium (Room 116), 1101 Floyd Avenue, Rome, NY, and is free and open to the
public, with ample parking available.
A Legacy Rooted in the Land
Dan Casler represents more than 300 years of continuous farming in the Mohawk
Valley, spanning 11 generations. His family farm produces over 120,000 gallons of
milk annually from approximately 110 cows, demonstrating the sustainability and
scale of a modern family-run dairy operation.
Farming, Policy, and the Future
As both a farmer and public official, Casler brings a unique perspective on how policy
decisions shape agriculture. He has been a vocal advocate for farm aid and
subsidies, emphasizing their importance to the survival of small farms.
During his MVILR presentation, Casler will discuss the impact of state and federal
policies on small farms, the growing tension between family farms and corporate
agriculture, the future of agriculture in rural New York, and the economic and
regulatory challenges facing upstate farmers.
