Arts Together: Hamilton Conversations

In the spirit of the dramaturgy of Mutual Aid, we ask ourselves how can we be of use to one another during these times? How can we support each other and our communities? How do we use arts experiences to bring us together and celebrate their power?

A Conversation with Sayward Schoonmaker and Fox Whitney

Join us for a one-hour zoom event with Stone Quarry Hill Art Park artistic director Sayward Schoonmaker and performance artist and dancer Fox Whitney. In this one-hour Zoom event, Schoonmaker will introduce artworks in the park’s landscape, and Whitney will lead participants in a meditation from Impossible Shades of Green, an artwork featured in Personal Programs, an exhibition curated by Schoonmaker.

To receive a Zoom link for this event, please email director@artsatthepalace.org with “Art in Fields” as the subject line.

Stone Hill Quarry Hill Art Park is a four-season outdoor art space open to the public every day of the year. Outdoor artwork takes part in this ever-changing landscape. Along trails and in meadows, agricultural fields, and forests, art interacts with the environment to reveal the changing seasons and passage of time. The park is located at 3883 Stone Quarry Hill Road, Cazenovia, NY. Grounds open every day from dawn to dusk. The suggested donation is $5 per person.

Sayward Schoonmaker is a multidisciplinary artist and educator. She characterizes her art practice as communing with the formal—an act of staring-thinking-making-moving that vibrates her intuitive sensors. Of late, this practice manifests in textual, multimedia works on paper and objects. Her work has been exhibited across the United States, most recently at Weinberg Newton Gallery, IL, the Hyde Collection, NY and Adds Donna Gallery, IL. Her poems have appeared in Really System, PRINTtEXT’s Didactic, elimae, The Common, and Bailliwik. She is the author of one chapbook 3259 (Dancing Girl Press). She holds a BS in Studio Art from Skidmore College, an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Department of Fiber and Material Studies, and an MLIS from the Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies. Sayward is a recent recipient of residencies at Denniston Hill, NY, and Monson Arts, ME. She is currently the artistic director of Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, Cazenovia, NY.

Fox Whitney is the architect/choreographer behind Gender Tender, an interdisciplinary performance project based in Seattle that centers his black, mixed, queer and transgender point of view. He creates experiences that investigate the nature of queer relationships, trans histories, and the surreal nature of transformation. Gender Tender engages a team of artists trained in Fox’s unique methods modeled on sports teams, cults, sitcoms, and riots. He has performed in work by Morgan Thorson, Gabrielle Civil, Vladimir Kremenović, Keyon Gaskin, and Malic Amalya. His most recent project MELTED RIOT, a queer meditation inspired by the Stonewall Riots of 1969 was presented by Velocity Dance Center on the 50th anniversary of the rebellion. He is currently an Artist in Residence at On the Boards theater in Seattle, WA.
