This summer, Mongabay founder Rhett Ayers Butler published a wonderful profile of Dan Janzen, Winnie Hallwachs and the more than half-century of science and conservation that helped shape ACG.
But the story is about much more than two people. It is about a tropical dry forest once heavily degraded by cattle and fire that has been allowed to regenerate—and the generations of Costa Rican park leaders, parataxonomists, educators, field staff, neighbors and families who turned an ambitious conservation idea into the living, working landscape that ACG is today.
Perhaps most importantly, it captures something fundamental about ACG: conservation is never finished. Forests have to be protected, fires fought, people trained, children educated, biodiversity studied, and institutions sustained—not for a few years, but for generations.
