BEDFORD, N.Y. — A Connecticut man is facing felony drug and other charges after New York State Police responded to a report of public lewdness at the Bedford Service Area on southbound Interstate 684.
State Police said troopers from Somers were called to the service area at about 3:24 p.m. Sept. 22. They reported finding Virgil J. Naveda, 56, of Darien, Connecticut, naked at the rest area and showing signs of impairment.
The charges are allegations. Naveda is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Troopers report drugs found during vehicle inventory
According to State Police, troopers administered standardized field sobriety tests before taking Naveda into custody.
Police said an impound and inventory search of his vehicle resulted in the discovery of approximately 66 grams of gamma-butyrolactone, or GBL; 49 grams of butanediol; 7 grams of methamphetamine; and numerous items described as drug paraphernalia.
Charges filed
State Police said Naveda was charged with:
- Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class B felony;
- Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor;
- Three counts of public lewdness, a Class B misdemeanor; and
- Operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, an unclassified misdemeanor.
Return to court scheduled
Naveda was arraigned Sept. 24 in Bedford Town Court and released on his own recognizance, according to State Police. He was directed to return to court Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m.
The case remains subject to the court process, and the filing of criminal charges does not establish guilt.
