Syracuse city proposes ARPA funds to expand ShotSpotter program

Syracuse’s Shotspotter program has been essential for helping Syracuse Police locate the sound of gunfire over the past five years, and now the city is hoping to install it in more neighborhoods.

The city is proposing that the money will come from the American Rescue Plan, and officials want to use more than a $170,000 to expand the detection system to Syracuse’s north side.

Mayor Ben Walsh is also proposing another $554,000 of funds go towards providing tasers to more police officers.

Along with that is a program that trains officers on how to de-escalate situations with people who may have a range of mental health and disability conditions. The funding would cover three years worth of training.
