Mohawk Valley Junior Frontiers Honors Graduating Seniors and Student Achievement at Annual Awards Banquet
UTICA, N.Y. — Academic excellence, leadership, perseverance, and community service were celebrated as the Mohawk Valley Junior Frontiers recognized its outstanding students during its 2026 Annual Awards and Graduation Banquet, recently held at the Roselawn Banquet Facility.
The banquet drew 139 students, parents, alumni, educators, community leaders, and supporters who gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of Junior Frontiers members during the 2025–2026 academic year. Throughout the evening, students were recognized with cash awards and honors for academic achievement, leadership, personal growth, and service.
Award categories included Highest GPA, Most Improved Grades, Outstanding Kitabu Meeting Attendance, Most Kitabu Book Reports and Essays Submitted, Best Writers, Best Orators, Up-and-Coming Frontiers, Best Behaved Students on the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Tour, Stood Up & Stood Out Awards, Courage Awards, Community Service Awards, Junior Frontiers Spirit Awards, and the prestigious Ms. and Mr. Junior Frontiers honors. The organization also recognized its 10 graduating seniors, many of whom earned significant college scholarships and academic honors. Among the accomplishments celebrated were:
– A Presidential Scholarship to SUNY Geneseo.
– Two Utica Dollars for Scholars awards.
– Multiple scholarships from SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
– A Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute Scholarship.
– Presidential and Out-of-State Scholarships from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, along with a Merit Scholarship from the University at Albany.
Senior Club President Unice Elliott-Jefferson welcomed attendees and reflected on the importance of mentoring the next generation of leaders. Junior Club President Nurdin Awo also addressed the audience, thanking mentors, parents, and volunteers for their continued support.
A special Parent Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Melitta Crowder in recognition of her outstanding dedication to the Junior Frontiers program. The banquet’s keynote speaker, Junior Frontiers alumnus Corey Williams, a Proctor High School graduate and former NAACP Youth Leadership participant, is a college
graduate and currently works in the Mohawk Valley region while remaining actively engaged in community service and mentorship. Williams encouraged students to pursue their dreams through education, perseverance, and service to others. Fourteen Junior Frontiers alumni returned to share how the organization helped shape their educational and professional journeys, providing inspiration for the next generation of members.
The accomplishments celebrated this evening reflect the commitment of our students, families, volunteers, and community partners, said Aaron Woodman, Project RISE Consultant for the Mohawk Valley Junior Frontiers. "These young people continue to demonstrate that hard work, leadership, and academic excellence open doors to unlimited opportunities.
The Mohawk Valley Junior Frontiers is dedicated to developing future leaders by promoting academic achievement, character development, civic engagement, cultural awareness, and educational excellence. Through mentoring, college preparation, leadership development, and community service, the organization continues to prepare young people to become successful scholars and leaders throughout the Mohawk
Valley and beyond.
