NEWSTEAD, N.Y. — An Erie County Thruway crash left one person dead early Friday after a tractor-trailer struck a disabled pickup truck stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 90, according to New York State Police. Troopers responded at about 2:30 a.m. Sept. 4 to the westbound lanes of the New York State Thruway in the town of Newstead. Investigators said a 2018 Volvo tractor-trailer was traveling west when it struck a disabled 2012 Chevrolet pickup that was on the right shoulder.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Chevrolet pickup had become disabled and was positioned on the right shoulder when the westbound tractor-trailer collided with it.
State Police said the tractor-trailer driver was given standardized field sobriety tests at the scene. Troopers reported that the tests showed no signs of impairment.
The investigation remains active, and police have not announced charges or a final determination of what caused the collision.
Crash caused morning traffic delays
The collision led authorities to close the right westbound lane while investigators and emergency crews worked at the scene. The lane restriction caused traffic backups stretching for several miles during the Friday morning commute, according to local reports.
The left lane remained open while crews handled the crash scene. The right lane later reopened after the investigation and cleanup progressed.
What remains unknown
Several important questions were still unanswered in the initial State Police report. Authorities had not publicly identified the pickup driver, and they had not said why the tractor-trailer left its travel lane or how long the pickup had been disabled before the crash.
Police also had not announced whether weather, visibility, vehicle condition, speed, distraction or any other factor contributed to the collision. Those details should not be assumed until investigators release additional findings.

Those safety rules are intended to protect stranded motorists, police officers, tow operators, highway workers and other people who may be outside a vehicle near fast-moving traffic.
What drivers can do near a disabled vehicle
- Slow down when approaching a stopped vehicle on the shoulder.
- Move to an adjacent lane when traffic conditions allow.
- Avoid distracted driving and keep full attention on the roadway.
- Give emergency workers and tow operators as much space as possible.
- Do not stop near a crash scene unless directed by police or unless immediate help is needed.
