Veterans Day may have been last week, but the celebration of their service continues.
Honor Flight Syracuse held its Flags of our Heroes ceremony on Sunday to honor 70 veterans and their families with a posthumous tribute.
Twice a year, Honor Flight flies 80 veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the monuments that were put up in their honor.
Nearly 70 fallen veterans and their families received special recognition from Honor Flight Syracuse.
Individual photos of the veterans were placed beside their memorial along with an encased american flag and tribute signage.
“The Flags of our Heroes is a way to honor those who are no longer with us and could not make the flight,” program coordinator Nate Bradley said. “It’s really more for the families than anything else. We take a photo down and photograph it in front of the appropriate memorial for that veteran and then we have the ceremony here at the war memorial in Syracuse to present the photo and certificate to the families.”
As of April 24, Honor Flight has done 15 missions.
The Honor Flight network is currently serving veterans from World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War eras.
