COVID-related ICU hospitalizations rise in Albany County

COVID-19-related intensive care hospitalizations in Albany County are at their highest rate in a little more than a year, and new positive cases went back above 1,100 over the last day.

County Executive Dan McCoy reported 1,166 new positive cases in the last day, with the seven-day average of cases per 100,000 up to 243. Hospitalizations rose by a net of one to 119, but 18 of those are in intensive care, up from 16 a day earlier.

“This number isn’t far from the peak of 24 individuals we had reported back on January 4 of last year,” McCoy said in a statement.

Another death, a man in his 80s, brought Albany County’s toll since the start of the pandemic to 480.

As of Tuesday, 79.5% of Albany Countians have gotten at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, with 72.1% now fully vaccinated.

The county is asking people who test positive using at-home kits to submit those results on their website through this online link.
