Violent Ballston Spa Robbery Leads to 3 Arrests

Three Men Arrested After Violent Ballston Spa Robbery

State Police say a victim was beaten unconscious with a baseball bat before cash and a cellphone were stolen.

A Ballston Spa robbery investigation has led to the arrests of three men accused of taking part in a violent late-night attack that left a victim seriously injured. New York State Police said the victim was repeatedly struck with a baseball bat, lost consciousness and was robbed of cash and a cellphone outside a Maple Avenue residence.

The three defendants face felony robbery, gang assault and assault charges. The arrests took place separately between May 23 and July 8, following an investigation that lasted several weeks.

The allegations are serious, but each defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

What Happened During the Ballston Spa Robbery?

Troopers responded at approximately 10:50 p.m. on May 19 to a residence on Maple Avenue in Ballston Spa after receiving a report of a robbery and a seriously injured person near the victim’s home.

According to State Police, investigators determined that three people allegedly participated in the assault.

Police identified two of the defendants as:

  • Braedon M. Loveday, 19, of Middle Grove
  • Timothy Wilbur, 34, of Middle Grove

The third defendant was identified only as an 18-year-old. State Police did not release that person’s name in the July 9 announcement.

Authorities allege that Loveday struck the victim multiple times with a baseball bat until the victim became unconscious. Police said the attackers then took the victim’s cellphone and cash.

All three defendants allegedly left the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived.

State Police described the victim’s injuries as serious but did not provide further information about the victim’s identity, current medical condition or whether the victim knew the defendants.

Three Suspects Arrested on Separate Dates

The arrests did not occur at the same time. Investigators located the defendants during three separate encounters.

Braedon Loveday Arrested During Interstate 87 Traffic Stop

State Police said Loveday was located on May 23 during a traffic stop on Interstate 87 in Round Lake.

Troopers took him into custody and transported him to the State Police barracks in Saratoga for processing.

Loveday was later arraigned in Ballston Town Court. A judge remanded him to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility in lieu of:

  • $50,000 cash bail
  • $100,000 bond
  • $500,000 partially secured bond

The State Police release did not identify the reason for the traffic stop.

Unnamed 18-Year-Old Arrested at Home

The second defendant was arrested July 3 at the person’s home, according to police.

After processing at the Saratoga State Police barracks, the 18-year-old was arraigned in Ballston Town Court and sent to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility.

Bail was set at:

  • $40,000 cash
  • $40,000 bond
  • $200,000 partially secured bond

Authorities did not explain why the defendant’s name was withheld. Because the person is legally an adult, the decision may reflect circumstances not included in the public announcement. No further explanation should be assumed without official confirmation.

Timothy Wilbur Taken Into Custody With Probation Department Assistance

Wilbur was arrested July 8 with assistance from the Saratoga County Probation Department.

Police said he was transported to the Saratoga barracks, processed and arraigned in Ballston Town Court.

Wilbur was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility in lieu of:

  • $50,000 cash bail
  • $100,000 bond
  • $500,000 partially secured bond

State Police did not say why the Probation Department was involved in locating Wilbur.

What Charges Do the Defendants Face?

Each defendant was charged with three felonies:

  • First-degree robbery, a Class B felony
  • Second-degree gang assault, a Class C felony
  • Second-degree assault, a Class D felony

First-degree robbery is among New York’s most serious robbery offenses. In general, the charge can apply when a person allegedly commits a forcible theft while causing serious physical injury or using or displaying a dangerous instrument.

The exact legal theory prosecutors intend to use in this case was not stated in the police announcement.

What Is Gang Assault?

Despite its name, a gang assault charge does not necessarily require proof that the defendants belonged to an organized street gang.

Under New York law, gang assault generally concerns an assault involving multiple people who allegedly act together and cause physical injury. Prosecutors must still prove each required element of the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.

That distinction matters because the everyday meaning of “gang” may differ from the way the term is used in a criminal statute.

Police Say the Investigation Took Nearly Two Months

The reported attack occurred May 19. The final announced arrest took place July 8.

That timeline suggests investigators continued working to identify, locate and arrest the suspects after the first defendant was taken into custody.

State Police did not release information about:

  • How investigators connected the defendants to the attack
  • Whether surveillance video was recovered
  • Whether the baseball bat or stolen property was found
  • Whether the vehicle allegedly used to leave the scene was identified
  • Whether additional arrests are possible
  • The victim’s present medical condition

Those details may emerge through future court filings or statements from prosecutors.

A Serious Case With Important Legal Safeguards

Violent crime reports naturally raise concern, particularly when an attack is alleged to have happened near someone’s home.

Still, an arrest is not a conviction. Police allegations represent one stage of the criminal justice process. Prosecutors must present evidence, defense attorneys may challenge that evidence and a court or jury must determine guilt.

Bail decisions also do not establish whether a defendant committed an offense. Bail is intended to address a defendant’s return to court and other considerations permitted under New York law.

The public has an interest in both community safety and a fair legal process. Responsible reporting requires recognizing both.

What Happens Next?

The case is expected to continue through the local court system. Possible next steps may include grand jury proceedings, additional hearings, plea negotiations or a trial.

State Police had not announced future court dates or released statements from the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office as of the July 9 news release.

Anyone with information connected to the case can contact New York State Police Troop G. The agency listed Trooper Stephanie O’Neil as the public information officer for the announcement.

Conclusion

The Ballston Spa robbery case now includes three defendants facing major felony charges after a victim was allegedly beaten unconscious and robbed outside a Maple Avenue home.

State Police say the suspects fled before officers arrived, leading to separate arrests over a seven-week period. Loveday, the unnamed 18-year-old and Wilbur were all ordered held at the Saratoga County Correctional Facility after arraignment.

Residents should follow verified updates from law enforcement and the courts while remembering that all three defendants remain presumed innocent unless convicted.
