Pedestrian Airlifted After Route 28 Crash in Woodgate Saturday

A pedestrian was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital after being struck by a car Saturday, Oct. 24, at Route 28 and Rogers Road in Woodgate. New York State Police are investigating the Woodgate pedestrian crash, according to WKTV’s report citing the Woodgate Volunteer Fire Department.

The person had serious injuries when taken from the scene. That description comes from the initial emergency response, not a current hospital update.

The Woodgate pedestrian crash highlights the need for increased safety measures in the area.

Emergency crews respond to the Woodgate pedestrian crash

Woodgate Fire Chief Anthony Sege said his department responded at about 11:21 a.m. to the intersection in the town of Forestport. Mercy Flight took the injured person to Upstate University Hospital, according to the Rome Sentinel’s account of Sege’s statement.

Otter Lake firefighters, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and State Police also helped. Sege said volunteers from other organizations who saw the crash stopped to assist.

The response briefly closed Route 28. Woodgate firefighters directed traffic, and WKTV reported that the state Department of Transportation reopened the road. The reported closure was part of Saturday’s response, not a notice of an ongoing shutdown.

Help came from nearby departments

The response involved crews from more than one northern Oneida County community. In its Monday report, Flack Broadcasting said the Woodgate department thanked Otter Lake and Forestport firefighters for helping with traffic control.

Woodgate and Otter Lake are hamlets within Forestport, according to the town’s website. The response involved local volunteers, law enforcement and an air medical crew.

What remains unknown

The reports reviewed through Monday, Oct. 26, did not provide a cause, announce charges or give an updated condition for the injured person. They also did not explain the movements of the car and pedestrian before the collision. Those gaps should not be treated as evidence of fault by either person.

General pedestrian safety guidance

Separate from this investigation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises drivers to watch for pedestrians, obey speed limits and prepare to stop when turning near a crosswalk. Drivers should not pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk because someone may be hidden from view.

The agency advises people walking to use sidewalks when available and to face traffic when no sidewalk is available. These are general safety recommendations, not findings about what happened in Woodgate.
