NORWICH, N.Y. – The Chenango County Historical Society (CCHS) offers free programming this season through the “Family Fun Days at the Museum!” series. Created to connect community with local history in engaging ways, the series is held during select Saturdays from 10 am until 4 pm. Sponsored by the Roger Follett Foundation, this year’s themes celebrate unique stories of Chenango County.
“Family Fun Days at the Museum!” explores local narratives through engaging museum activities. The series begins on July 19, providing guests the opportunity to make “Wearable Rainbows” using paracord manufactured by Gladding Braided Products in South Otselic.
On Aug. 2, celebrate “National Coloring Book Day” with coloring sheets inspired by the latest Community Gallery exhibit, “Creativity In Boom: The Storied Illustrations of Suzanne Bloom.” An award-winning children’s author and illustrator, Bloom has lived and worked in McDonough for many decades. Her work will also be featured during “National Book Lovers Day” on Aug. 9. All guests who participate in Bloom’s “Illustrator Gator” scavenger hunt that day will be entered to win a free copy of one of her beloved books!
Explore how science – particularly chemistry – made history here in Chenango County by creating molecule models and developing other experiments during STEM Day on Aug. 30. The fun continues on Sept. 20, when CCHS will be participating in the inaugural Chenango Open Farm Day with agricultural activities and special performances. The final program of the series will be the annual “Worldwide Day of Play” celebration on Sept. 27, when the museum will be hosting community collaborations that encourage kids and families to get up, out, and playing around.
“This generous investment from the Roger Follett Foundation provides museum programming that is truly unique to Chenango County,” said Jessica Moquin, CCHS executive director. “We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to offer these dynamic cultural activities.”
First established in 1939, CCHS is the area’s premier heritage museum dedicated to celebrating local culture—its unique traditions and noteworthy stories. Programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Additional funding for the “Family Fun Days at the Museum!” series has been provided by the Roger Follett Foundation. CCHS is also a proud partner of Bloomberg Connects, an app that allows visitors to enhance their exhibit experience through audio clips, videos, and more.
