Just days before President-elect Donald Trump is set to return to the Oval Office, a federal judge has temporarily blocked the release of special counsel Jack Smith’s report on his investigations into Trump’s actions. The report, which Smith is expected to submit to Attorney General Merrick Garland, outlines the findings of investigations into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office and efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee who previously dismissed the classified documents case against Trump, issued the ruling in response to a request from two of Trump’s former aides, Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, who were co-defendants in the case. The aides argued that making the report public would unfairly prejudice them while a federal appeals court reviews whether to reinstate charges against them. Trump’s attorneys have also opposed the report’s release, describing it as a “lawless political stunt.”
