Rome, NY – The Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement (MVILR), in
conjunction with Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC), will host Oneida County
Sheriff Robert M. Maciol for a timely presentation on public safety and avoiding
scams, on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at 10:45 a.m.
The event will take place at MVCC’s Rome Campus, Plumley Complex, Festine
Auditorium, Room 116, 1101 Floyd Avenue, and is free and open to the public, with
ample parking available.
Sheriff Maciol has served as Oneida County Sheriff since 2011, following a 25-year
career in law enforcement, and is widely recognized for his focus on community safety
and public education.
The presentation comes as scams targeting older adults continue to rise. National
reports show Americans age 60 and older lose billions annually to fraud, with common
schemes including government impersonation scams, tech support fraud, romance
scams, and investment fraud. Older adults are often targeted due to accumulated
savings and trust-based tactics used by scammers.
Locally, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office has warned residents about an increase in
scam activity, particularly impersonation of government agencies such as the IRS or
Social Security Administration, where criminals attempt to obtain personal and
financial information.
During the session, Sheriff Maciol will discuss:
Common scams impacting local residents
Warning signs and red flags
Steps to protect personal and financial information
How and where to report fraud
