Utica mayor proposes establishing Civilian Public Safety Advisory Board

After the launch of a Utica Police Department advisory committee last year, a number of reforms could be coming to the department.

Mayor Robert Palmieri said the committee recommended reforms like creating a Crisis Intervention Team, implementation of implicit bias training, and a plan to recruit more minority youth.

The Utica Police Department has already implemented many of these reforms.

And now, Palmieri said Thursday his administration is proposing legislation to establish another one of the committee’s recommendations: The creation of a Civilian Public Safety Advisory Board.

He also said the city is proposing to use American Rescue Plan Act funds to hire five new officers who are focused on gun violence in Utica.
