Utica Dollars for Scholars awards more than 70 scholarships to area students

Utica Dollars for Scholars presented 78 scholarships to students at their ceremony last week at First Presbyterian Church in Utica, N.Y. These awards were first year awards to students currently in high school. An additional 29 awards included renewals for students currently in college. The total amount of all scholarships awarded this year was $170,030, each ranging from $250 to $5,000, with some renewable for multiple years.
Most students awarded these scholarships attend Thomas R. Proctor High School and Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High School, but a number of students from other area schools received awards, too, including Rome Free Academy, the Utica Academy of Science, Sauquoit Valley High School, and Waterville High School.
To date, Utica Dollars for Scholars has presented 1,655 awards to local students totaling more than $770,000 during its 23-year run. The non-profit organization relies on donations from companies and individuals to help our students with financial need as they attend college. New awards this year include the Dr. John P. Sheehan Scholarship Trust Fund of The Community Foundation, the Virginia A. Bowmaker Scholarship Trust Fund of The Community Foundation, and five awards funded by the Utica Free Academy Alumni Association.

A list of students who won first-year and non-renewable awards is attached.
