UMHA SEEKING AMERICORPS MEMBERS

Central New York:  The Utica Municipal Housing Authority (UMHA) is seeking committed and dedicated people to serve as AmeriCorps members to help disabled youth and people in poverty.  AmeriCorps is a national community service program where people devote a year to serve the nation. AmeriCorps members receive a stipend, health insurance, child care assistance, college scholarship, and professional mentoring and career training.  Positions are open in Oneida County, New York.

As part of its spring and summer recruitment drive, the UMHA is hiring 15 members.  The AmeriCorps program helps people get out of poverty through housing/homeless assistance, financial literacy/life skills education, veteran services, teaching disabled youth life and job skills, job and career readiness training, and veteran assistance. The program is also recruiting people with an interest in community outreach, organizing, digital graphics, communications, and social media.

The UMHA has full and part time as well as day and evening positions.  Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.  The AmeriCorps program is ideal for people with gaps in employment, people returning  to the workforce, youth, recent college graduates, college students seeking a gap year experience, people seeking a career change, and retirees.  AmeriCorps members may collect unemployment compensation while enrolled in the program so long as they are ready and willing to accept employment.  The program offer post-program job placement help and career ladder programs. Its graduates have obtained employment in the government, non-profit, and private sectors.  Income from AmeriCorps does not affect eligibility for SNAP and subsidized housing.
