Three Arrested After Heuvelton Assault Investigation

Three Charged Following Assault Investigation in Heuvelton

State Police say surveillance footage helped identify three suspects connected to a May assault and property damage incident.

A month-long investigation by the New York State Police has resulted in the arrest of three individuals connected to an alleged assault and property damage incident in the Village of Heuvelton. According to investigators, surveillance footage played a key role in identifying those involved after a woman was allegedly attacked during a late-night altercation.

The arrests highlight how modern investigative tools, including video evidence, continue to assist law enforcement in resolving cases that might otherwise remain unsolved.

What Happened in Heuvelton?

According to the New York State Police, troopers responded to State Street in Heuvelton at approximately 11:39 p.m. on May 18, 2026, after receiving a report of an assault.

Investigators determined that a woman walking in the area became involved in a verbal and physical confrontation with several individuals. During the incident, the victim was allegedly struck and fell to the ground. Police said the fall resulted in damage to the victim’s cellular phone.

Surveillance Footage Helps Identify Suspects

State Police reported that investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the surrounding area and were able to identify three individuals allegedly involved in the altercation. Those identified were:

  • Bruce A. Cayea, 40, of Fort Covington

  • Makenzie R. Cayea, 30, of Fort Covington

  • Eric L. Brothers, 41, of Heuvelton

The use of surveillance video has become increasingly important in criminal investigations, particularly in cases involving public incidents where independent witnesses may be limited.

Protection Order Violation Alleged

During the investigation, troopers discovered that Eric Brothers and the victim were subject to an active stay-away order of protection, with the woman listed as the protected party.

An order of protection is a court-issued directive designed to prevent contact between individuals when safety concerns exist. Violating such an order can result in criminal charges.

Brothers Arrested First

Police said Brothers was interviewed and arrested on May 19, 2026. During a search conducted as part of the arrest process, troopers allegedly discovered narcotics in his possession.

He was charged with:

  • Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree

Following arraignment in the Town of Oswegatchie Court, Brothers was remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at:

  • $5,000 cash

  • $10,000 bond

  • $25,000 partially secured bond

Additional Charges Filed Against Two Others

Troopers continued investigating the incident after Brothers’ arrest. According to State Police, investigators determined that Bruce Cayea and Makenzie Cayea were responsible for damaging the victim’s cellphone during the altercation.

On June 21, 2026, both individuals voluntarily appeared at the State Police station in Ogdensburg, where they were arrested and charged.

Their charges include:

  • Harassment in the Second Degree (Physical Contact)

  • Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree

Both defendants were issued appearance tickets and are scheduled to return to the Town of Oswegatchie Court at a later date in August.

Why This Case Matters

While the incident began as a reported assault, the investigation expanded to include allegations involving:

  1. Physical violence

  2. Property damage

  3. A possible violation of a court-issued order of protection

  4. Narcotics possession discovered during an arrest

Cases involving active orders of protection often receive heightened attention from law enforcement because courts have already identified a need for legal safeguards between involved parties.

The Role of Video Evidence

One notable aspect of this case is the role surveillance footage reportedly played in identifying the suspects. Police frequently rely on video from businesses, homes, and public areas to reconstruct events and verify witness statements.

As camera systems become more common in communities across New York State, video evidence continues to be a powerful tool in criminal investigations.

What Happens Next?

The criminal charges filed in this case will proceed through the court system. As with all criminal matters, the allegations remain accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Court proceedings are expected to continue in the coming months as prosecutors and defense attorneys present their respective cases.

The investigation began with a late-night assault report in May and concluded with three arrests over the course of several weeks. State Police say the evidence gathered, including surveillance footage and follow-up interviews, helped establish the basis for the charges filed against the three individuals involved.
