The sacrifices made by those who served our nation will always be remembered

For many, Memorial Day is a day off from work or school and a chance to spend time with family and friends.
However, it is important that we remember the true meaning of sacred observance. This is a time for us to acknowledge and recognize the brave men and women who lost their lives defending our freedom.

The history of Memorial Day goes back many years.

After the Civil War ended, the leader of a group of Union veterans established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of those who died in the war with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30, a date that some believe was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

Many years later, Congress would pass the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971, and Memorial Day was declared a national holiday. While still called Decoration Day by some, Memorial Day was placed on the last Monday in May.

While we use Memorial Day and other days like it to remember those who gave their lives while keeping us safe, we must always keep these men and women on our minds.

We must always recognize and remember the sacrifices that they and their families made on our behalf.  Their bravery and dedication are the reason our nation continues to exist today.
As President Harry S. Truman once said, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.”
