Stifling defense leads Dolgeville to 18th sectional title

It was a battle of the unbeatens in the Class D final at the Dome Friday evening.

Dolgeville was going for their 18th section title, while Adirondack was looking to claim their first Class D crown since 1991.

The fans were packed and boisterous in the stands at the Loudhouse. The Blue Devils crowd had a lot to cheer about straight out of the gate.

Early in the first quarter, Jared Bilinski broke an 84-yard run to get his team on the board first. It was his first of two scores on the night.

In the second quarter, there was another big run, but this time, it was a 50-yard strike by Dolgeville quarterback Greg Gonyea, Jr.

The only momentum the Wildcats would muster was on the defensive side of the ball in the first half, when they recovered a fumble.

Offensively, they couldn’t capitalize because the Dolgeville defense was stifling.

The Blue Devils defense stayed stout throughout the contest and ended up holding an explosive Adirondack offense to just six points in a 20-6 win.

“I want to say thanks to all my coaches for this. Unfortunately, last year we weren’t able to do this. Coming out this year, this was our goal. In my interview at the beginning of the year, I said, ‘We’re going to come out and pull out a section title,’ and that’s what we did,” Gonyea said.

“It feels great,” Bilinski said. “My dad played in the Dome, all his friends played in the Dome, and I used to be the water boy, so I was on the sidelines in the Dome. I always wanted to play here and win here, and we did.”

With the win, Dolgeville improved to 10-0 on the season.
