Stickley House, home of furniture icon, now historically protected

The National Park service has designated the Gustav Stickley House in Syracuse as a historic place with an official sign unveiled Monday.

Stickley was a furniture design pioneer, and created what came to be known as “Craftsman Style.” His home on Columbus Avenue is being preserved and restored into a museum.

County Executive Ryan McMahon says the house plays a big part in the city’s history.

“I think that this has a real opportunity to be an anchor for the neighborhood, but in addition to that, it’s interesting. It talks about our history as a community. You can’t build a property like this anymore without spending lots and lots of money,” said McMahon.

McMahon plans to include $250,000 for the Stickley House in his next budget.
