I applaud the United States International Trade Commission for heeding our calls to overturn the Trump administration’s abusive newsprint tariffs, which were nothing but an economic attack on the First Amendment.
“As the commission found, Canadian newsprint does not represent a threat to the U.S. But the tariffs, advanced by an administration unable to hide its contempt for the media, raised costs on a newspaper industry already struggling in today’s economy and put jobs and local newspapers at risk.
“In New York, we stood with our local newspapers against these tariffs because we believe that the freedom of the press is sacred and that local newspapers play an essential role in our communities. And we will always stand up for the pursuit of truth and justice against those who attack the press and our American values.
