Statement from Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon on NYS Correctional Facilities and Worker Conditions

Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon released the following statement in response to the ongoing concerns raised by  correction officers and employees across New York State’s prison system:

The safety of our state correctional facilities must be a top priority. I have heard from officers- active and retired, family members, employees, and civilian employees and I stand with the dedicated men and women working tirelessly in our  correctional facilities and recognize the urgent need to address the critical issues they face: mandated overtime, chronic  staffing issues that result in unsafe conditions. These concerns cannot be ignored.

They are committed public servants facing untenable conditions, and their voices must be heard. An independent  investigation into New York State’s correctional facilities must occur immediately. This investigation will provide a full, unbiased assessment of the challenges at hand and guide necessary reforms to ensure a safe environment for both employees and those in custody.

While I understand that such an investigation takes time, I am actively working during our current budget discussions to advocate for funding dedicated to staff recruitment and retention, improving facility conditions, implementing advanced security measures such as body scanners, and re-examining aspects of the HALT Act to ensure both staff and inmate safety.

New York State has a responsibility to ensure that policies, even when well-intended, do not create unintended harm. As my colleagues in the Assembly have also stated, we must act in good faith to address these pressing issues. I am committed to working with leadership to move forward with an investigation, policy discussions, and legislative action that will result in meaningful change.

Public safety starts with those who uphold it. I urge swift action to address these concerns and will continue advocating for solutions that ensure safe working conditions, fair labor policies, and a secure correctional system for all.
