Anika, one of Poitier’s six daughters, also acknowledged her sisters and their individual relationships with the iconic actor.
“I see him in my beautiful sisters. In Beverly, I see his conviction,” she said. “In Pam, I see his strength; in Sherri, I see his delightful sense of humor; in Gina, I see his compassion, and in Sydney, his artistry. I hear him in my son’s laughter, and I see him in my daughter’s passion for social justice.”
Poitier’s daughters Sherri, Beverly and Pamela are from his first marriage to Juanita Hardy, People reports.
Anika and Sydney Tamiia are from Poitier’s second marriage to Joanna Shimkus in 1976. Gina, Sidney’s youngest daughter, died in 2018 at 57.
The actor was 94 at the time of his death and was considered one of Hollywood’s leading Black men in film, Shadow & Act reported.
He had a range of films debuting in theaters including Lilies in the Field and A Raisin in the Sun. He was also the first Black actor to be nominated for an Oscar.
