Royal Roots & Rhythms Festival Brings Music, Dance and Culture to Utica
UTICA, N.Y. — Music, dance, food and cultures from around the world will come together Saturday, Aug. 29, when Utica Royalties presents the Royal Roots & Rhythms Festival: A Celebration of Culture & Community from noon to 4 p.m. at Hanna Park in Utica.
The festival is free and open to all ages and will feature live entertainment, cultural performances, food vendors, arts and crafts, family activities, raffles and prizes.
A featured performance will come from Zorkie Nelson and the Gballoi, bringing African music, drumming and cultural rhythms to Hanna Park.
The entertainment lineup also includes Hilda Jordan, who will lead salsa dancing; African Masquerade, presenting African cultural dance and traditions; T Sho, performing live music; and The Garifuna Group HATE, showcasing Garifuna music and cultural traditions.
“Royal Roots & Rhythms is about bringing our community together and giving families an opportunity to celebrate the cultures, music and traditions that make Utica special,” said Hawa Peters, founder and executive director of Utica Royalties.
The festival gives residents an opportunity to experience some of the cultures and traditions represented throughout Utica and the Mohawk Valley while spending an afternoon with family, friends and neighbors.
Utica Royalties empowers youth through cultural, educational and community programs. The Royal Roots & Rhythms Festival is supported by Project RISE, Chobani and New York Folklore, with raffles and prizes planned throughout the celebration.
Utica Royalties is also scheduled to perform at the New York State Fair, giving the organization’s young performers an opportunity to showcase their talents and represent Utica before a statewide audience.
