Rome Surprise from Santa Signups Open Through Nov. 8

City of Rome families can apply online for free Christmas toys through Nov. 8, with one application allowed per household.

Rome Surprise from Santa applications opened Monday, Oct. 19, giving City of Rome families three weeks to request free Christmas toys through the Rome Rescue Mission. The registration window closes Sunday, Nov. 8, 2026.

The program is limited to families who live in the City of Rome and have children living in their household. There is no fee. Families must submit one online form per household, and a parent or guardian will need valid identification when the gifts are picked up.

The Mission will contact approved households directly with the pickup date, time and location after the gifts are ready. Families can start at the official Surprise from Santa information page or go directly to the 2026 online application.

“Every child deserves to experience joy on Christmas,” Rome Rescue Mission Executive Director Lisa Patierno said in the announcement. “Surprise from Santa helps families who need a little extra support, and we encourage them to sign up during the registration period.”

Rome Surprise from Santa: who can apply

The published rules are short, but each one matters. The applicant must live within the City of Rome. The children receiving assistance must live in the applicant’s household. Only one application may be submitted for that household.

The Mission describes the program as free. It also says the parent or guardian picking up gifts must show valid identification. The organization has not published an age range, income limit, list of required documents beyond that pickup ID, or a guaranteed number of gifts. Families with questions about those details should contact the Mission before relying on assumptions.

Rome Rescue Mission is located at 413 East Dominick Street in Rome. Its main telephone number is 315-337-2516. Families should use that number or the Mission’s official website if they need help understanding the rules or completing the form.

How to register

  1. Visit the Mission’s official 2026 program page and open the online application.
  2. Submit one form for the entire household, not a separate form for each child.
  3. Enter accurate contact information so the Mission can reach you about pickup.
  4. Watch your phone and email after applying. The Mission will send the pickup details directly.
  5. Plan to bring a valid parent or guardian ID at pickup.

Applicants should submit the form by Nov. 8. The Mission has not said that applications are first come, first served, so families should not treat that as a published rule. Applying early can still leave time to correct a typo, ask a question or resolve a contact problem before the deadline.

What families should know about pickup

The Mission is not posting a universal pickup date or public distribution location. Instead, it will give each participating family the necessary information directly once the gifts are ready.

That approach makes accurate contact information especially important. A mistyped phone number, an inbox that is full or an email message routed to spam could delay a family’s notice. Applicants should save the Mission’s phone number, check voicemail and look in email spam folders during the weeks after registration.

A parent or guardian should also make sure the name used on the application can be matched to the identification brought to pickup. If another adult may need to collect the gifts, call the Mission in advance and ask what authorization or identification will be accepted. The published instructions do not explain substitutions, so families should not wait until pickup to raise that question.

What this means for Rome families

For a household managing rent, food, heating and other winter costs, a toy program can protect part of the family budget while giving children something to open at Christmas. The application is also narrow in scope. It does not promise cash, food assistance or help with utility bills.

Families needing broader support can still contact the Mission to ask about current services. The organization says it serves more than 200 meals each day and offers other programs for people facing hunger, homelessness and difficult life circumstances. Availability and eligibility can change, so residents should confirm the current rules directly rather than assuming that one application enrolls them in other services.

The Phoenix covered the Mission’s 2024 Christmas toy registration, but families should use only the 2026 page and 2026 form for this year’s program. Old dates, contacts or directions can remain in search results after a program year ends.

Protect your information and avoid holiday scams

Holiday assistance periods can attract fraudulent social posts and copied application links. Rome Rescue Mission says Surprise from Santa is free. An applicant should not have to pay a fee, buy a gift card or send money to reserve toys.

Before entering household information, check that the program page begins with romemission.org and that the application link matches the SurveyMonkey address posted by the Mission. Do not put Social Security numbers, banking details or photographs of identification into an unofficial form. The public announcement does not ask applicants to send those items by email or social media.

If a message requests money or sensitive information while claiming to represent the program, stop and verify it by calling 315-337-2516. Families should also avoid posting children’s names, ages, school information or pickup details in public comments.

How neighbors can help

People who want to support the program should contact Rome Rescue Mission before buying or dropping off toys. The public signup notice does not list requested age groups, gift categories, condition requirements or a donation deadline. Calling first can prevent well-meant donations from missing the program’s current needs.

Residents can also visit the Rome Rescue Mission website to learn about its work and current ways to give or volunteer. Donors should use official channels and keep receipts for their records. A social media fundraiser using the Mission’s name should be verified before money is sent.
