Prize-Winning Mt. Everest Mountaineer to Speak at Hamilton College

Steve Swenson, former president of the American Alpine Club and a Piolet d’Or prize-winning mountaineer, will give a lecture and book signing on “Karakoram, Striving for the Summits,” on Monday, April 22, at 7 p.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center, at Hamilton College. The event is free and open to the public.

Swenson has climbed the world’s highest mountains, including Saser Kangri II and K2, and he did a solo ascent of Mount Everest. He won the Piolet d’Or mountaineering prize when he climbed Saser Kangri in alpine style. At the time, Saser Kangri was the world’s second highest unclimbed mountain.

He has also authored articles for the American Alpine Journal, Climbing, Rock & Ice, and Alpinist magazines.

His new memoir Karakoram: Climbing Through the Kashmir Conflicts (2017), will be available for purchase at the event.
