The Onondaga County redistricting process is coming to a close after weeks of controversy and back and forth.
On Wednesday, dozens of people filled the Onondaga County legislative chambers, and most came with a simple message — vote no on the proposed legislative district map.
The legislature is slated to vote on the Republican-drawn map Friday. It is one of three produced by the Onondaga County redistricting commission.
“Map 2” was the commission’s choice map, with two opposing votes placed by the only two Democratic commissioners.
The vote came after several public hearings where the majority of the public comments were requesting the process and vote be delayed.
This final public hearing was called just a week before the final vote.
During the commission’s process, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a law setting explicit guidelines for the drawing up of legislative maps.
Should the Onondaga County map not follow those guidelines, it could be challenged in court.
