New federal prosecutor sworn in Friday in Upstate New York

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Carla Freedman was sworn in Friday to lead the federal prosecutor’s office in the Northern District of New York, the first woman ever confirmed to that position.

The longtime assistant becomes U.S. attorney for a region that includes Syracuse, Binghamton and Albany and covers northern New York. She was nominated by President Joe Biden on Aug. 10 and confirmed by the Senate Tuesday.

She succeeds acting U.S. Attorney Antoinette Bacon, who was never confirmed by the Senate.

Freedman had served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Syracuse office since 2007 and became the narcotics chief in 2018.

“After 14 years as an assistant U.S. attorney, I am honored to lead the incredible lawyers and staff in our office as we represent the criminal and civil interests of the United States,” she said in a prepared release. “Our guideposts will continue to be fairness and equal justice for all.”

She was previously an assistant district attorney in Manhattan for 16 years.
