Albany County reported 1,010 new positive COVID-19 cases over the last day, the highest single-day total it’s had since the start of the pandemic.
The county’s seven-day average of cases per 100,000 is now up to 165.7, and a woman in her 30s died, bringing the county’s death toll since the start of the pandemic to 474.
The new case number is “the second time daily cases broke into the thousands in the last week,” County Executive Dan McCoy said in a statement Thursday. “To put that number into perspective, the largest single day increase we recorded last winter was 351, and this goes to show you just how contagious the omicron variant is.”
On a positive note, hospitalizations decreased by a net of 10, now at 99 total. Twelve of those are in intensive care.
County officials say that more than 10,000 test kits will be distributed based on population, and will be made available at the following Stewart’s Shops locations:
- Altamont: 1001 Altamont Boulevard
- East Berne: 788 Helderberg Trail
- Feura Bush: 1360 Indian Fields Road
- Ravena: 2457 Route 9W
- Selkirk: 1344 Route 9W
- Voorheesville: 2475 Delaware Turnpike
The county is asking people who test positive using at-home kits to submit those results on their website through this online link.
