MVCC’s Rian Carter named SUNY Scholar Athlete

Mohawk Valley Community College student and basketball player Rian Carter was named a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar Athlete Award, which recognizes outstanding academic excellence and athletic achievement.

Rian Carter, a Coaching certificate major from Rochester, has earned many honors during his time at MVCC. In addition to being named to the President’s List, Carter has been named the top 2018 Male Athlete at MVCC by the Kiwanis Club. He also was named to the All-Mountain Valley Conference Team and a First Team All-Conference performer, and the 2017 Torchia Classic Tournament MVP.

“It is my pleasure to congratulate our Scholar Athlete awardees for their achievement in the classroom, and on the playing field,” said SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson. “Whether competing at a Division I or intramural level, all of those honored today are committed to excellence in their athletic pursuits, sportsmanship, and personal development. They balance a challenging workload, while demonstrating leadership and service.”

In order to be considered for this award, student athletes were nominated by their campus athletic director. Nominees’ academic credentials and athletic achievements were then reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across SUNY system and members of the SUNY provost’s office.

MVCC offers one of the most extensive, diverse, and successful two-year college intercollegiate athletic programs in the country, with 19 sports — 9 for men and 10 for women. The Hawks are national champions with 24 national team championships and 169 individual national champions. Learn more at www.gomvhawks.com.
