MVCC hosts High School Math Competition

High School Students Excel at MVCC Math Competition

Several high school students from the area earned top honors at a mathematics competition hosted by Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the college’s Utica Campus.

Students from five local high schools competed individually and in teams, tackling a 20-question exam covering pre-calculus topics such as arithmetic, algebra with real and complex numbers, geometry, trigonometry, probability, statistics, and logic.

Individual Winners:

1st Place: Loc Dang, Central Valley Academy

2nd Place: Nathan Clough, Westmoreland High School

3rd Place: Angelina Le, Proctor High School

Team Competition Results:

1st Place: Central Valley Academy
Team members: Anthony Joyce, Christopher Joyce, Greg Durant, and Loc Dang
Coach: Ron Kuty

2nd Place: Westmoreland High School
Team members: Rylan Kryczkowski, Ashlyn Genther, Ariana Malerba, and Nathan Clough
Coach: Nicholas Darrah

The team from Poland Central School received a special “Spirit Award” for their enthusiasm and camaraderie.

Prizes and Scholarships:
Winners received gift cards, monetary prizes, T-shirts, and 3D printed awards created by MVCC’s FABLab.. The first-place individual winner, Loc Dang, was also awarded the prestigious Francis A. Wilcox Memorial Full-Tuition Presidential Scholarship. This scholarship, provided by the MVCC Foundation, covers full tuition costs for a full-time student at MVCC.

The event highlighted the exceptional talent and dedication of local students and educators, fostering a love for mathematics and academic excellence.
