Mohawk Valley artists or art organizations should direct public mural creation in the region

Following the selection of the Saratoga Arts Council to direct the creation of public murals in the Mohawk Valley as part of the Cultivating Havens for the Arts through Regional Murals (CHARM) program, New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo is urging the governor to consider artists or an arts organization from within the Mohawk Valley, as determined by the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) initiative, to oversee the work.
The Mohawk Valley REDC consists of Otsego, Oneida, Schoharie, Montgomery, Fulton, and Herkimer counties.
“There are many talented artists and creative organizations in my Senate District and the Mohawk Valley, including the Kirkland Art Center, Munson, Sculpture Space, and the Rome Art and Community Center,” Sen. Griffo said. “While I appreciate the Saratoga Arts Council’s efforts to create a vibrant and welcoming arts community and am not doubting their ability, it is my belief that the Mohawk Valley’s CHARM program partner should come from the region. I am hopeful that the governor will agree and will consider the selection of a local entity to oversee the creation of public murals in the Mohawk Valley.”
Administered by the New York State Council on the Arts, the CHARM program funds the creation of 40 works of art across the state. All mural sites are publicly accessible, and locations include libraries, schools, small businesses, public parks, and parking structures. There were 57 murals across 21 counties completed as part of last year’s initiative.
A copy of Sen. Griffo’s letter to the governor is attached.

Dear Gov. Hochul:
I am writing regarding your recent announcement that 12 community partners across the state have been
selected to direct the creation of public murals as part of the Cultivating Havens for the Arts through
Regional Murals (CHARM) program.
A recent news release from your office announcing statewide partners for this year’s CHARM initiative
states, “CHARM partner organizations were chosen for their demonstrated knowledge of their regions,
experience managing mural projects, and their relationships with key stakeholders in selected areas.”
The release further states, “The designs include celebrations of notable individuals, majestic natural
landscapes, iconic sites, and local narratives.”
While I am appreciative of this program and its efforts to create more public art, increase vibrancy and
revitalize communities, I am disappointed that the Saratoga Arts Council was chosen as the creative
partner for the Mohawk Valley region.
I am not disparaging the Saratoga Arts Council and all the great work that they do to cultivate a vibrant
and welcoming arts community. However, I believe that the Mohawk Valley is fortunate to be home to so
many talented and creative artists and organizations who have a “demonstrated knowledge of their
region” and “relationships with key stakeholders.” There are many in my Senate District and the region
who would be more than capable of participating in this program.
As such, I am urging you to select a creative partner within the Mohawk Valley, as determined by the
Regional Economic Development Council initiative, to participate in this year’s CHARM program.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
