Midtown Utica Community Center (MUCC) welcomes Kay Klo as new Executive Director

Kay Klo, Proctor High School graduate and former refugee from Burma, hired to lead an organization that serves refugees and low-income residents.

The Board of Directors at MUCC is pleased to announce the hire of our new Executive Director, Kay Klo. After graduating from Mt. Holyoke College and completing a Fulbright scholarship in Thailand, Kay Klo returned to Utica, where she wanted to serve her community.

She has been a member of MUCC since 2015, and has served as Assistant Director and counselor at MUCC summer camp. There are few people as familiar with the running of the organization and the challenges our community faces, especially during this global pandemic. Kay Klo brings with her many skills and a great deal of relevant experience. She serves as an interpreter for Karen language.

In her new role, Kay Klo is the face of the community center. She has oversight over
programming, finances, the maintenance of the physical space, and our large team of dedicated volunteers. She oversees various committees, meets with the Board of Directors, and leads the grant-writing and fund-raising efforts. Kay Klo began her new position as Executive Director of MUCC on Sept. 1. Specifically, the current efforts of the organization include vaccine outreach for the hardest-to-reach groups, job training for youth, anti-violence and anti-racist educational programming for community members, and responding to the needs of refugees families living in crisis, poverty, and food insecurity. She welcomes volunteers, interns, and others who wish to contribute to these efforts in different ways.

“I am honored to have the chance to serve my community and the city that accepted my family and so many others like us.” Klo said. “Our community center celebrates people from all cultures and language groups. I am lucky because every day I get to meet new people and learn about their lives and their stories.”

The Midtown Utica Community Center (MUCC) is a multicultural and refugee-friendly space that serves all. Our vision is to support the refugee and low-income population of Midtown Utica by providing educational and cultural programs, solving problems by connecting community members with other agencies and resources, and promoting a safe community environment for people of all ages and cultures.
