Major Drug Bust: State Police Seize 7 Kg of Cocaine – New York State Police say a Sept. 15 traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in Rosendale led to the seizure of about seven kilograms of cocaine and two felony drug charges.
The stop was conducted by members of the Troop F Community Stabilization Unit after troopers reported seeing a 2017 Nissan traveling north in violation of multiple New York vehicle and traffic laws.
K-9 deployed during stop
Police identified the driver and sole occupant as Jesus A. Camacho, 36, of Columbia, New York. During the investigation, State Police said K-9 Kell was deployed and alerted to the odor of narcotics.
Troopers then searched the vehicle and reported finding approximately seven kilograms of cocaine.
Felony charges filed
According to State Police, Camacho was charged with:
- Criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first degree, a Class A felony.
- Criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree with intent to sell, a Class B felony.
Police said Camacho was arraigned Sept. 15 at Ulster County Centralized Arraignment Part and remanded to the Ulster County Jail.
Large quantity cited in police release
The seven-kilogram figure reported by State Police represents the amount investigators say was recovered from the vehicle. The agency did not provide laboratory-test details in its public release, nor did it identify any additional substances or weapons connected to the stop.
The release also did not explain the specific traffic violations that led troopers to stop the Nissan.
Separate Rosendale drug arrest also announced
The Sept. 25 State Police newsroom also announced another Rosendale case involving a Sept. 1 traffic stop in which troopers said approximately two kilograms of cocaine were found in a different vehicle. The cases were described in separate releases and involved different defendants.
Nothing in the public releases indicates that the two arrests are connected.
Presumption of innocence
Criminal charges are allegations. Camacho is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. The State Police release did not identify defense counsel or list a future court appearance.
Initial police reports often provide only a limited account of an investigation. Court filings and later proceedings may add context, clarify evidence or address legal questions surrounding a stop and search.
Troop F handling the case
The case was handled by New York State Police Troop F. Trooper Justin Whritenour was listed as the interim public information officer.
