Letter To The Editor: Dawn LaGuerre

Dear Editor,

As an ad hoc freelance writer and advocate for democracy, I am deeply troubled by the chilling implications of recent developments for free speech and democratic principles in our nation. President-elect Trump’s support for legislation to revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofit organizations critical of the government sets a dangerous precedent. Such measures risk stifling dissent, silencing marginalized voices, and eroding public trust in essential institutions.

Equally alarming is Meta’s decision to end third-party fact-checking on Facebook, replacing it with a community-based system. This move undermines efforts to combat misinformation, leaving us vulnerable to the spread of dangerous rhetoric. Without professional oversight, false narratives will flourish, exacerbating divisions and potentially inciting violence.

The consequences of misinformation are real and devastating. During California’s catastrophic wildfires, false claims that FEMA funds were depleted spread fear and mistrust, compounding an already dire crisis. On a personal level, I recall the plight of a Syrian friend in New York City, forced to leave the country after expressing criticism of government policies, under threat to his family’s livelihood.

These examples underscore the fragility of our democracy when free speech is curtailed and misinformation is allowed to thrive unchecked. As a writer, I fear that the next presidency may escalate these threats, chilling dissent and eroding the fundamental freedoms upon which our nation was built.

Now, more than ever, we must remain vigilant in defending democracy and the right to speak truth to power.

Sincerely,
Dawn Laguerre
