“The recent incident at Mohawk Correctional Facility has sent correction of icers and national guard members to the hospital receiving on-going medical treatment. These of icers and guard members also have titles that include; mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, grandmother, grandfather, friend, caregiver, and neighbor to name a few. They took an oath to serve and protect our communities, and that is exactly what they were doing when they were unknowingly exposed to a hazardous substance. After
discussing this incident with DOCC’s leadership, union leaders, family members, and retired correction of icers, it is evident that we need further review of all these policies, and to call for an immediate closure of all visitor areas when an incident occurs.
As a legislator, I am preparing legislation that would further hold the person(s) that possesses the dangerous/hazardous material while entering a state operated facility completely responsible and accountable for their actions.” Please keep our of officers and guard members in your thoughts and prayers as they deserve to be safe and continue to face challenges.”
