Williams Gives Thumbs Up to Overturning of Roe
I’m horrified at the news that a 28 year old pregnant Georgia woman named Amber Thurman died because she could not get the abortion care she needed. What is even more heartbreaking is that only 2 weeks after her death was reported, a Georgia Judge ruled that the state’s abortion ban after 6 weeks was unconstitutional. Her death could have, and should have been prevented.
Why did this tragedy happen? The Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in the Dobbs decision in June 2022. Georgia and 21 other states, changed laws that put women’s lives at risk. Amber took abortion pills she legally received from a clinic, but her body did not fully cooperate causing a serious infection. She went to a hospital to get care. The family’s attorney said the doctors allowed her to “cry and vomit and turn blue for 20 hours.” Doctors were afraid of going to prison if they gave Amber a lifesaving procedure to clear the uterus called a D&C. As a result, she died and her 6-year-old son will now be raised by his grandma.
So, when Rep. Williams proudly stated in his Op-Ed in the Syracuse Post-Standard on Sept 5th that he agrees with the Dobbs decision, that tells me he believes Amber Thurman’s death was acceptable. States’ rights are more important than women’s rights and reproductive freedom. More than that, if it was me, my daughter, or anyone’s loved one, their death would simply earn a shrug from him.
I’m voting for reproductive freedom on November 5th, which means I’m voting for all Democrats on my ballot and yes on Prop 1.
