Irish music, song and dance at the Kirkland Art Center

CLINTON, NY — Lively fiddle tunes, evocative ballads, and energetic dancing will fill the Kirkland Art Center in Clinton from 5:00pm on Saturday, March 14th. That’s the day the art center will host an Irish Evening at the KAC. The fundraising event will feature traditional musicians from the local area, including Pat Reynolds and Deb Putman on fiddle, Tom Hourican on flute, and Eileen McIntyre on the Irish harp. The talented group has played together informally for years, in their homes and at Irish sessions in pubs across central New York.

“They were a big hit at our first Irish Evening last year and we are delighted to welcome them back for more jigs, reels, and hornpipes played in the traditional way of an Irish session, with sets of tunes of similar styles played together,” said Damhnait McHugh, KAC Co-President member, “The tunes in each set often share interesting names too, and the conversation between the sets about the tunes, the composers, and the history is all part of the enjoyment the music brings.”

In addition to playing session tunes, the musicians will set the pace for young dancers from the Johnston School of Irish Dance showing off their steps on stage. The Johnston School of Irish Dance was founded in the early 1990s and today has over 200 dancers at all levels in classes in Syracuse, Fayetteville, Vestal, Watertown, and Utica. Students begin to learn Irish dancing as early as four years old, and the school has many champion dancers of all ages who compete at national and international events.

The traditional musicians will also accompany vocalist Stephanie Steele, a local favorite who will bring some classic Irish ballads to the evening.

Irish refreshments available during the evening will include Barry’s tea and soda bread, a selection of Irish beers, as well as wine and soft drinks.

“The musicians and dancers are kindly donating their time, talents and energy to the KAC for what will be a wonderful evening,” said Jennifer Potter-Hayes, KAC Board Co-President. “We hope the community comes out to enjoy it all and to support our art center. It is the cultural anchor in our town.”

Tickets for the Irish Evening at the KAC are available at www.kacny.org or 315-853-8871, or at the door. Tickets cost $15 for KAC members and $20 for general admission.
