The Mega Matchup on Friday night featured a Class B clash between undefeated Homer and V-V-S.
This game was picked because it was a No. 3 seed (V-V-S) vs. a No. 2 seed (Homer), plus the last time these two teams met, the Trojans pulled out a 30-21 win.
That combination gave this game a great chance to be a thriller on Friday night, and it did not disappoint.
Homer came out swinging, and they looked like they might literally run away with the game after they took a 20-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
But V-V-S had no quit in them, and scored two touchdowns in less than a couple of minutes thanks to a recovered squib kick.
They went into the break with all types of momentum and a 28-26 lead.
In the second half, the back-and-forth scoring went into full effect.
Literally, Homer scored on every drive they had, and V-V-S may have done the same.
The Indians were led by James Wheeler and Bryce Palmer, who combined for six touchdowns on the night.
The Trojans were led by Sam Sorenson, who scored six times for the home team.
When the final horn sounded, Homer was in full celebration mode after pulling out a 62-49 win.
“Going into half, we just kept our composure. Everybody was like, ‘Well, we were down by seven the last time we played them at half, we’re only down by two now,’ so we were positive and we were ready to come out and beat them,” Sorenson said.
“They are so energized because that was a long year,” Homer coach Gary Podsiedlik said.
Next up, Homer takes on New Hartford next Saturday in a battle of the unbeatens at the Dome in the Class B Section final.
