Historic Victory for MVCC Men’s Soccer in National Championship; Women’s Team Shines as Runner-Up

The MVCC Men’s Soccer Team won its first national championship in program history after defeating six-time defending champions Dallas Richland 2-1 on Sunday, Nov. 17, during the NJCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship hosted by Genesee Community College in Batavia, N.Y.

The first goal of the match was scored by Tony Gjomemo, while Souayibou Diop secured the game-winning goal. Both players were also named to the Championship All-Tournament Team.

Santiago Molina Villafane was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Hawks goalkeeper Jaime Mata earned the Championship’s Most Valuable Defensive Player award, while MVCC Head Coach Dominic DiMaggio was named Coach of the Tournament.

The Championship All-Tournament Team included 12 student-athletes who excelled throughout the competition. All eight participating teams were represented, with multiple members from each of the final four teams.

After an incredible season, the MVCC Women’s Soccer Team finished second in the 2024 NJCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship, following a 3-0 loss to Delta Community College (Michigan). The Hawks’ runner-up finish marks the second time in the last three years they have secured second place.

Krista Panko, a sophomore from Ilion, N.Y., was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player.
