From Utica to the Nation: Ryan Nobles Returns to Where His Journalism Career Began

UTICA, NY – SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) welcomed award-winning journalist and NBC News
Chief Capitol Hill Correspondent Ryan Nobles to campus on Saturday, October 3, for a special
conversation reflecting on his career in journalism and his return to the Utica area, where his career
began.
Presented in partnership with WKTV NewsChannel 2 and sponsored by the SUNY Poly Center for
Business and Applied Ethics, “From Utica to the Nation: A Conversation with Ryan Nobles, NBC News’
Chief Capitol Hill Correspondent” was held in the Wildcat Field House and moderated by WKTV
NewsChannel 2 Evening Anchor Jason Powles.
During the conversation, Nobles reflected on his journey from beginning his career at WKTV in Utica to
covering Congress and national politics in Washington, D.C. The discussion explored his experiences
reporting on some of the nation’s biggest political stories, the important role of the press in keeping the
public informed, and the responsibilities journalists and elected officials carry in serving and
communicating with the public.
“Ryan’s experiences provided an important opportunity to hear firsthand about the responsibilities and
challenges that come with covering national politics and public institutions,” said Jim Staihar, SUNY Poly
Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Business and Applied Ethics. “We were pleased to
bring this conversation to SUNY Poly and engage our campus and Mohawk Valley communities in a
thoughtful discussion about journalism, ethics and public service.”
Nobles joined NBC News in 2022 after eight years at CNN and now serves as NBC News’ Chief Capitol Hill
Correspondent. He appears regularly across NBC News platforms, including TODAY, NBC Nightly News,
NBC News NOW and NBCNews.com.
“It was an honor to return to Utica and reconnect with so many people who played an important role in
the early stages of my career,” said Ryan Nobles, Chief Capitol Hill Correspondent. “The SUNY Poly team
put together an incredible event that gave us the opportunity to highlight what makes Central New York
so special while discussing the future of journalism and the impact of the upcoming 2026 midterm
elections. It was a thrill to share the stage with my old partner, Jason Powles, and reconnect with so
many friends from WKTV. There truly is no place like Utica, and SUNY Poly is a shining example of what
makes this region such a special place.”
