Carroll County Deputy Logan Utt Killed in Virginia Welfare Check

A Hero’s Badge Goes Dark: The Murder of Deputy Logan Utt and the Manhunt for an Armed Fugitive

A routine welfare check in Carroll County, Virginia turned into a deadly ambush Friday night, leaving Deputy Logan Utt dead and a dangerous fugitive on the run. Deputy Utt, a military veteran and devoted family man, answered a call to help someone in need and paid for it with his life. Now, the entire region is on edge as law enforcement from multiple agencies race to capture the man responsible before he can strike again.

A Quiet Friday Night Turns Deadly

At approximately 9:26 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2026, two Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to 13658 Fancy Gap Highway in Cana, Virginia. A family member had called in a welfare check, concerned about someone at the residence. It was exactly the kind of call deputies answer dozens of times each week.

What happened next was anything but routine.

When the deputies arrived and made contact with the man inside, identified as Michael Puckett, he opened fire on both officers without warning. The deputies returned fire despite being struck. One deputy was hit in his ballistic vest and survived. Deputy Logan Utt was not so fortunate.

“One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition,” Carroll County Sheriff Kevin A. Kemp said in an official statement.

Puckett fled the scene immediately and as of Saturday afternoon remained at large.

Who Was Deputy Logan Utt?

Deputy Logan Utt was far more than a badge and a uniform. He was a husband, a father, and a man who built his life around serving others.

Before joining the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in 2023, Utt served in the United States Armed Forces. He also volunteered as a firefighter with the Mount Airy Fire Department, adding yet another layer to a life devoted to community protection.

  • He had been with the Sheriff’s Office for approximately three years

  • He was a military veteran who transitioned directly into law enforcement

  • He was a husband and father at the time of his death

“Becoming a deputy sheriff was a lifelong dream, and he worked every day to make Carroll County a safer place,” Sheriff Kemp said.

“Deputy Utt was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished family member, friend, and respected member of our law enforcement family. His service, courage, and dedication will not be forgotten.”

A memorial has already been placed outside the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as the community mourns.

The Man Behind the Gun: Michael Puckett’s Troubling History

The suspect in Deputy Utt’s killing is not a stranger to law enforcement. Michael Timothy Puckett carries a disturbing criminal record that raises urgent questions about how he remained free and armed.

A History of Weapons and Violence

In 2016, Puckett was convicted in Patrick County on seven counts involving weapons and explosives offenses. Investigators discovered what they described as a makeshift camp site in Ararat, Virginia, containing:

  • Molotov incendiary cocktails

  • A pipe bomb

  • A hand grenade

  • An AK-47 assault rifle

  • An improvised trip device capable of discharging a shotgun shell

  • Ammunition stockpiles

  • Nazi and Aryan paraphernalia

He was sentenced to 41 years in prison. However, a Patrick County court spokesperson confirmed that his active sentence was just one month per felony charge, meaning he served only eight months total before being released.

More Recent Trouble

According to OAN News, on June 2, 2025, Puckett was arrested again in Patrick County on charges of arson, manufacturing a firebomb, and possession of an explosive by a convicted felon. A pretrial hearing for those charges was scheduled for August 17 in Patrick County Circuit Court.

He was apparently free on those pending charges when he shot Deputy Utt.

A Massive Manhunt Underway

The search for Puckett has become one of the largest law enforcement operations in recent memory for the region. Multiple agencies have joined the hunt across the Virginia-North Carolina border:

  • Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Wytheville Field Office

  • FBI

  • U.S. Marshals Service

  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)

  • Mount Airy Police Department

  • Multiple local Carroll County agencies

Virginia State Police issued a direct appeal to the public: “We are asking the public to check surveillance video or trail/hunting camera images to assist in real-time tracking of the fugitive,” according to a statement from VSP.

Authorities are also urging area residents to:

  1. Lock all vehicles

  2. Close garage doors

  3. Lock sheds and outbuildings

  4. Remove any items from outside that Puckett could use to evade capture

  5. Call 911 immediately if he is spotted

Do not approach Michael Puckett under any circumstances. He should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. Anyone with information should call 540-444-7788.

Leaders Respond with Grief and Urgency

The reaction from elected officials was swift. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger took to social media Saturday to express her concern and call for public cooperation.

“My office is closely monitoring this tragic incident. I encourage anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Virginia State Police. My thoughts are with the deputy’s family and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as we work through this awful situation,” Governor Spanberger wrote on X.

Community organizations across the region added their voices:

“Our deepest condolences and continual prayers are going out to everyone at Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as they work to navigate this tragic event and immeasurable loss,” Carroll County Emergency Services wrote on Facebook.

The Second Attack on Carroll County Deputies in 14 Months

This tragedy does not exist in isolation. According to the Mount Airy News, this is the second time in 14 months that Carroll County deputies have been shot while in the line of duty.

In March 2025, two deputies were wounded during a confrontation with Edmond Johnson, 29, of Louisiana, a man wanted in multiple states in connection with a road rage shooting in Greensboro, North Carolina. Johnson was killed in the exchange of gunfire. Both deputies survived.

Just this week, Sergeant Joshua Bowers and Deputy James Young were named recipients of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association 2026 Valor Award for their actions in that incident. They are scheduled to be officially recognized in September.

Carroll County’s law enforcement community has shown extraordinary courage under fire, again and again.

What This Tragedy Tells Us About a Broken System

The case of Michael Puckett forces an uncomfortable conversation about sentencing and public safety. A man convicted of weapons offenses severe enough to draw a 41-year sentence served only eight months. He was free again to accumulate new charges. He was free again on those charges when he ambushed two deputies answering a family’s call for help.

This is not a political talking point. It is a factual chain of events that ended with a husband, a father, and a public servant dead on a Virginia highway.

The question of how we handle violent offenders with documented histories of explosives, firearms, and extremist activity is not an abstract one. It has a name now: Logan Utt.

“Carroll County has lost a hero, and a family has suffered an unimaginable loss,” the sheriff’s office said.

That loss belongs to all of us.
