UTICA, NY… September marks National Guide Dog Month, a time to recognize the remarkable role guide dogs play in empowering individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Throughout the month, the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) is celebrating the life-changing impact of guide dogs while highlighting the journey of Iris, a future guide dog sponsored by CABVI through its partnership with Freedom Guide Dogs.
Guide dogs provide far more than assistance with navigation. Research conducted by the American Foundation for the Blind and Guide Dogs for the Blind found that guide dog users consistently cite three key benefits: increased travel efficiency, greater confidence and emotional support, and enhanced social connections within their communities. Many handlers report that guide dogs help them move more smoothly through crowds, navigate obstacles more effectively, and experience a greater sense of independence in everyday life
Over the past year and a half, Iris has been learning essential skills, building confidence, and preparing for her future role as a guide dog. This fall, she will begin formal training at Freedom Guide Dogs, where she will receive advanced instruction before being matched with a person who is blind or visually impaired.
