Utica, NY – Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon proudly kicked off Ice Cream Month in the State of New
York today with a community celebration at Kookie’s Q & Creamery in Utica, where she presented a formal
Legislative Resolution honoring the importance of New York State’s dairy farmers and the enduring traditions
that make ice cream a cherished symbol of summer.
Joined by Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, Oneida County Clerk Mary Finegan, Oneida County Dairy
Ambassadors, local dairy producers, agricultural advocates, and area farm families, the event underscored the
vital connection between New York’s agricultural economy and the simple joys that bring people together.
“Oneida County is home to 132 dairy farms, making it one of the largest dairy-producing counties in
New York State,” said Assemblywoman Buttenschon. “Behind every scoop, cone, and bowl of ice
cream is a hardworking farmer and a proud family tradition. Our dairy farmers start their day before
the sun rises, work tirelessly to care for their animals, and provide the milk that makes up a
significant portion of our economy. This month is about honoring those farmers and their work,
reminding New Yorkers that when you choose local, you support so much more than a product, you
support a way of life.”
As a proud member of the Assembly’s Agriculture Committee, Chair of the Subcommittee on Export Trade and
Chair of the Committee on Small Businesses, Buttenschon hosted the event at Kookie’s Q & Creamery to spotlight
the essential role of small businesses in the Mohawk Valley and across New York State.
“Our local ice cream shops and dairy farms represent the very best of New York,” she continued. “They
create jobs, preserve family traditions, and provide community spaces where lasting memories are made.
The network of farmers and small business owners who pour their heart and soul into their work make
this possible, reminding us of the importance of supporting local business and local agriculture.”
According to the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the state is home to more than 2,700
dairy farms and approximately 630,000 dairy cows which produce over 16 billion pounds of milk annually,
making dairy the largest segment of New York’s agricultural industry and supporting over 26,000 jobs.
The resolution presented by Buttenschon, adopted by the State Assembly on May 14, formally memorializes
Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim July 2026 as Ice Cream Month in New York State, aligning with the national
observance.
