New Yorkers hoping to avoid traffic and parking at the Great New York State Fair now have another option. Tickets are on sale for Amtrak State Fair train service that will bring visitors directly to the fairgrounds during all 13 days of the 2026 fair.

Select Empire Service and Maple Leaf trains will stop at the special State Fair station from Wednesday, Aug. 26, through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7. The station is located within walking distance of the fairgrounds, allowing passengers to step off the train near the entrances rather than travel through Syracuse-area traffic.

The arrangement offers a practical alternative for families, older adults and visitors who do not want to drive long distances, search for parking or navigate crowded roads.

Five Trains Will Stop at the Fair Each Day

Amtrak will make five scheduled stops at the State Fair station each day the fair is open. The trains will serve passengers traveling from New York City, Niagara Falls, Toronto and communities along the Empire Corridor.

The scheduled trains are:

  • Maple Leaf Train 63: Leaves Moynihan Train Hall in New York City at 7:15 a.m. and arrives at the fair at 1:11 p.m.
  • Maple Leaf Train 64: Leaves Toronto at 8:20 a.m. and arrives at the fair at 2:29 p.m.
  • Empire Service Train 281: Leaves Moynihan Train Hall at 10:20 a.m. and arrives at the fair at 4:21 p.m.
  • Empire Service Train 283: Leaves Moynihan Train Hall at 1:20 p.m. and arrives at the fair at 7:13 p.m.
  • Empire Service Train 284: Leaves Niagara Falls at 6:27 a.m. and arrives at the fair at 9:29 a.m.

Travelers should confirm schedules when booking because departure and arrival times can change.

How to Find the State Fair Station

Passengers purchasing tickets online or through the Amtrak mobile app should enter “NYF” as their destination. The special station will appear only for dates when the fair is open.

Tickets may also be purchased at staffed Amtrak station counters or by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL.

That destination code is important. Searching only for Syracuse may take travelers to the regular Syracuse Regional Transportation Center rather than the stop next to the fairgrounds.

Hochul Promotes a Car-Free Trip to the Fair

Gov. Kathy Hochul said the direct service can remove some of the stress that comes with driving to one of Central New York’s largest annual events.

“Riding the rails gets you right to The Fair’s doorstep without the hassles of driving,” Hochul said. “It’s easy, convenient and affordable.”

The State Fair attracts visitors from across New York and beyond. That popularity can also mean crowded highways, busy parking areas and longer travel times, especially on weekends and during major concerts.

The train does not eliminate every travel challenge. Passengers must follow fixed departure schedules, and the most convenient trains may not operate at ideal times for every concert or family outing. Groups should compare ticket prices, travel time and return options before deciding whether rail or driving makes more sense.

Still, the direct stop provides a useful choice, especially for travelers already living near an Amtrak station.

Why Train Service Matters for Central New York

Direct rail service to the fair has been offered since 2002, according to the governor’s office. The partnership includes Amtrak, the New York State Department of Transportation and State Fair officials.

State Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said the service allows people from Buffalo, New York City and communities in between to leave the driving to Amtrak.

For Mohawk Valley residents, Amtrak service along the Empire Corridor may also make the trip more manageable. Travelers should check available itineraries from nearby stations and pay close attention to the return schedule before purchasing tickets.

The service may be particularly attractive to:

  • Visitors who want to avoid parking costs and traffic
  • Older adults who would rather not drive in heavy congestion
  • Families looking for a more relaxed travel experience
  • Tourists visiting from outside Central New York
  • Fairgoers attending concerts who do not want to drive afterward

Rail travel can also reduce the number of individual vehicles heading toward the fairgrounds. However, the environmental benefit for any individual trip depends on factors such as train occupancy, travel distance and how many people would otherwise share a vehicle.

What Passengers Can Expect on Amtrak

Amtrak says passengers on the Empire Service and Maple Leaf routes may have access to free Wi-Fi, café service, spacious seating and additional legroom. Business Class seating may also be available on some trains.

Travelers booking at least five days in advance may qualify for Amtrak’s “See NY and Save” promotion. Other discounts may be available for children, seniors and military personnel, depending on Amtrak’s terms and the selected trip. Passengers should review the final fare and restrictions before completing a purchase.

A train ticket does not serve as admission to the fair. Rail passengers must purchase fair admission separately.

Fair Admission Remains Affordable

The 2026 Great New York State Fair will run from Aug. 26 through Sept. 7 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. The official fair website confirms the event will last 13 days.

Regular adult admission is $8 before processing fees. The fair’s ticket information lists a total online cost of $8.32, including fees. Admission is free for children ages 12 and younger and adults ages 65 and older.

Admission includes agricultural exhibits, grounds entertainment and concerts at Chevy Court and Suburban Park. The 2026 Chevrolet Music Series is expected to include nearly 40 national recording acts, with multiple performances scheduled on most fair days.

The fair also features livestock, food vendors, demonstrations, midway rides and exhibits highlighting New York agriculture.

Planning the Return Trip Is Essential

A direct train ride can be convenient, but visitors should plan the entire day before leaving home.

Before purchasing tickets, passengers should:

  1. Confirm that “NYF” is listed as the destination.
  2. Review both arrival and return departure times.
  3. Check whether the schedule works with planned concerts or activities.
  4. Purchase separate State Fair admission.
  5. Allow time to walk from events to the train platform.
  6. Recheck the Amtrak schedule shortly before traveling.

Passengers attending an evening concert should pay particular attention to the final available return train. A train that arrives conveniently in the morning may not offer a same-day return at the desired time.

A Useful Option, but Travelers Should Compare Costs

Driving may remain less expensive for some families traveling together, particularly those coming from nearby communities. A vehicle also provides more control over arrival and departure times.

The train may offer greater value for individuals traveling alone, people coming from farther away or anyone who places a high value on avoiding traffic and parking.

The larger point is that fairgoers now have a meaningful transportation choice. Public events work better when people can reach them in more than one way.

Make Transportation Part of the Fair Plan

The Great New York State Fair is designed to showcase New York’s agriculture, food, music and communities. Getting there should not become the most stressful part of the day.

Anyone considering the Amtrak State Fair train should compare fares, reserve early and verify the return schedule. Travelers should also use the “NYF” station code rather than booking a standard ticket to Syracuse.

With five daily stops and a platform near the fairgrounds, the service could make the 2026 State Fair easier to reach for visitors across New York.
