Utica, NY: As a part of a recent program expansion, the Utica Municipal Housing Authority AmeriCorps Program will be providing Upstate Cerebral Palsy and the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees with AmeriCorps members. Starting in January 2019, five AmeriCorps members will be stationed at Upstate Cerebral Palsy where they will assist young people with disabilities to obtain jobs, increase financial literacy, acquire life skills, and explore careers. The AmeriCorps members (1.5 of time) at the Refugee Center will help refugees, immigrants, and newcomers with vocational training and job placement. Other AmeriCorps positions are available at public housing developments and the Utica Public Library Outreach Center.
The program will hold an AmeriCorps member recruitment fair on Thursday, December 27 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Chancellor Apartments Community Room, 417 Bleecker Street, Utica. Attendees are encouraged to bring their resumes. Members will start their 11-month term of service starting in January 2019.

Applicants must be willing to commit to 11 months of service, be 18 years of age or older, and have at least a high school diploma/GED. Relevant volunteer/job experience and post-secondary education such as an Associate or Bachelor’s Degrees are preferred. AmeriCorps positions may also serve as internship experiences for college students. AmeriCorps members must pass background checks, have a passion to help others, and possess qualities such as patience, empathy, tolerance, and a nonjudgmental attitude.
AmeriCorps is a program that engages more than 80,000 Americans in intensive service each year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country. AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance, fringe benefits, an education award, health insurance, childcare, and professional development opportunities. AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to gain personal and professional development skills, take on leadership roles, receive training and mentoring in paraprofessional case management and service coordination, work with community partners, and build professional networks. AmeriCorps is recruiting a wide range of members including seniors, young people, people changing careers, and others who want to make a difference in their communities. The program has both full and part-time slots available.
At Upstate Cerebral Palsy, AmeriCorps members will focus on strengthening home/school partnerships to foster better educational and economic opportunity outcomes for children with disabilities and their families. Through vocational education programs, AmeriCorps members will develop job opportunities as well as create appropriate curriculum and training opportunities to promote independence for people with disabilities. During this experience, AmeriCorps members will focus on job development, financial literacy, and housing goals to help people with disabilities achieve a higher level of independence.
The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees AmeriCorps member will provide vocational training and employment assistance to refugees, immigrants, and newcomers. They will work with community partners to facilitate relevant vocational training that is delivered in a culturally and linguistically relevant manner. They will also help to implement the agency’s new Welcome& Opportunity Center, which will open January 2019. The Center is designed to provide refugees, immigrants, and newcomers to the area information and access to area services, education and training opportunities, and the resources required to support meaningful integration, empower individuals and families to reach personal and economic goals, and create an inclusive environment where all can succeed.
