Munson kicks off Juneteenth weekend with free community celebration

Utica, N.Y. —Celebrate the start of the weekend-long, community-wide observance of Juneteenth with a special evening of art, music, food, and cultural connections from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at Munson Museum of Art, 310 Genesee St.

Enjoy music by DJ Doneilous King featuring recording artists who were also visual artists, including Miles Davis and Eryka Badu, a gallery tour highlighting works by African American artists in Munson’s collection, a watercolor mini-class by Munson instructor Annette Gurdo, a hands-on craft for children, and refreshments by Reset 315 and Mrs. Goodman’s Goodies.

“We are thrilled to kick off Juneteenth weekend at Munson with an evening that celebrates creativity, culture, and community,” said Bob Mortis, Director of Performing Arts and Special Programs at Munson. “We are especially grateful to our Juneteenth Planning Committee for their guidance and partnership in shaping this event. The program offers opportunities to experience music, visual art, and hands-on creativity, including a watercolor activity inspired by the work of Charles Burchfield, whose exhibition is currently on view. We look forward to welcoming the community as we honor the significance of Juneteenth through the arts.”

Funding for Munson’s Juneteenth celebration is sponsored by Sheila and Ron Cuccaro.
