A talk by Kira D. Jumet Assistant Professor of Government
Wednesday, October 18, 2017, 7:30 p.m. at The Other Side, 2011 Genesee St., Utica.
“Why did so many Egyptians choose to rise up against the Mubarak regime in January 2011? Professor Jumet argues that individuals are rational actors and their decisions are based on three factors: political opportunity structures, mobilizing structures, and framing processes.
She uses interviews conducted in Egypt during the Arab Spring to show how social media, violent government repression, changes in political opportunities, and the military influenced individual decisions whether or not to protest during the 2011 revolution, the transitional period, and the uprising in June 2013.” This is part of the continuing Hamilton College at The Other Side Lecture Series and is free to the public.
